What is a Catch?

There has been much discussion from fans, coaches, analysts and the league in relation to the catch rule and the lack of clarity for both officiating crews and fans alike. Roger Goodall announced that the league would be looking at this rule and ways to simplify it to ensure that much needed clarity.

They have, and it’s still not any clearer.

In the video you will see an interview conducted by Rich Eisen on his show where he quizzed NFL Executive, Troy Vincent on the new proposed catch rule amendments.

But before you listen to that, here is the rule as it is proposed currently by the NFL Competition Committee led by NFL Senior Vice President of Officiating, Al Riveron. These changes will be proposed during the Annual League Meeting next week.

  1. Control the ball

  2. Two feet down or another body part

  3. A football move such as:

  4. A third step

  5. Reaching/extending for the line-to-gain

  6. Or the ability to perform such an act

So, based on the above and according to Troy Vincent the infamous catches of both Dez Bryant and Jessie James would both stand. The way the proposed rule changes were engineered was to simply look at those two (as well as others) catches and map the language that would make those both catches.

Get your head around those, then watch the interview with Troy Vincent who try’s his best to explain it.

One concern some people have alluded to is the potential for more fumbles, which Troy Vincent addresses in this interview with Rich Eisen.
